The veneer peeling process is the production stage in which logs that have passed through the conditioning phase are processed in high-precision peeling machines and converted into thin wood layers. Peeling is one of the most critical production stages that directly determines veneer quality.

How Is the Peeling Process Carried Out?

Logs that have completed the conditioning stage are fed into the peeling machine. The log is fixed to the machine’s axis and rotated at high speed. A cutting blade in a fixed position contacts the rotating log and continuously separates a thin strip of veneer. This process takes place much like unrolling a roll of paper; as the log rotates, a continuous veneer strip is obtained from the outside inward.

Features of Peeling Machines

The peeling machines used at Alesta Naturel facilities are designed for high precision and efficiency. Blade angle and pressure settings are precisely adjusted according to wood species and log diameter. Thanks to automatic control systems, veneer thickness is kept constant and homogeneous quality is maintained throughout production. The machines are capable of producing veneer in various thicknesses ranging from 0.5 mm to 4 mm.

The Importance of Veneer Thickness

In the peeling process, veneer thickness directly affects the characteristics of the final product. Thin veneers allow for the production of more flexible and lightweight plywood, while thick veneers are used for higher-strength panels. Keeping the thickness constant at every point is of critical importance for the bonding quality and surface smoothness of the plywood panel.

Post-Peeling Operations

Veneer sheets coming out of the peeling machine are directed to the cutting unit. Here they are cut to standard dimensions and sorted. Veneer sheets checked for surface quality and thickness are separated to proceed to the drying stage. Broken, torn, or non-standard pieces are separated and processed accordingly.

    Conditioning quality, blade sharpness and angle, log centering precision, and machine speed directly affect peeling quality. Logs that have not been properly conditioned may break or tear during peeling.

  • Can every type of wood be peeled with the same machine?

    Yes, but blade angle, pressure, and speed settings differ for each wood species. Different parameters are applied for hardwoods such as beech and softwoods such as poplar. When the settings are not adjusted correctly, the waste rate in the peeled logs increases.
