Lamination

The veneer lamination process is the finishing stage in which the surface properties of plywood panels that have passed through the sizing phase are enhanced by applying a protective or decorative layer. Lamination is a critical stage that directly affects the panel’s moisture resistance, surface hardness, aesthetic appearance, and service life, and it also prevents concrete from adhering to the plywood.

Why Is Lamination Applied?

When raw plywood panels are used without surface treatment, they show limited resistance to moisture, impact, and abrasion. The layer applied to the panel surface through lamination eliminates these weaknesses. Thanks to lamination, the panel surface gains strong resistance to moisture and water; it hardens against impact and scratching; cleaning and maintenance become easier; aesthetic appearance improves; and service life is extended.

Film Lamination (Plywood Film Coating)

The most common type of lamination in plywood production is film coating. In this method, a special paper sheet impregnated with phenolic resin is applied to the panel surface and permanently bonded to the panel under high temperature and pressure. Thanks to film coating, the panel surface is completely sealed and achieves high moisture resistance. These panels, widely used in the construction sector, can be used repeatedly as concrete formwork. The film color is generally brown or black, although different color options are also available.

Melamine Lamination

Melamine lamination is preferred for panels intended for furniture and interior applications. Melamine coating gives the panel surface different appearances such as plain or wood grain patterns. Melamine surfaces, which offer high resistance to scratching and abrasion, are widely used in the production of furniture, kitchen cabinets, and office furniture.

Veneer Lamination

For projects requiring high aesthetic quality, natural or synthetic veneer lamination is applied. A thin natural wood veneer layer is bonded to the panel surface to achieve a solid wood appearance. Panels produced with veneers of beech, oak, walnut, and other precious wood species are particularly preferred in luxury furniture and interior design.

PVC, PVDC, and PET Lamination

PVC, PVDC, and PET film lamination methods are also widely used in decorative and functional surface applications.

PVC lamination is obtained by bonding a polyvinyl chloride film to the panel surface with heat and pressure. With its wide range of colors and patterns, flexible structure, and economical cost, it is a popular lamination type preferred for furniture, cabinet, and door surfaces.

PVDC melamine lamination provides superior resistance to moisture and chemicals. It is particularly preferred for kitchen countertops, bathroom cabinet surfaces, and wet area applications. It maintains surface integrity even in high-humidity environments.

PET lamination is obtained by applying a polyethylene terephthalate film to the panel surface. PET coating stands out for its high gloss, superior scratch resistance, and aesthetic appearance; it is widely used in caravans, boats, luxury furniture, and modern cabinet surfaces. It is also considered an environmentally friendly lamination option due to its recyclable structure.

Lamination Machines and Process

At Alesta Naturel facilities, the lamination process is carried out in high-temperature lamination presses. The panel surface is first cleaned and sanded. The lamination material is then precisely positioned and bonded to the panel under high temperature and pressure via the press. After the cooling stage, surface quality is inspected and the panels are packaged.
